MOJOKI SANGMA
In the heart of Shyamnagar village, a journey of determination unfolds with the life of Mojoki M Sangma, a weaver whose story resonates with triumph over adversity. Born on June 12, 1971, Mojoki's path was marked by challenges from the outset, yet her spirit led her to unexpected heights.
Though her formal education halted at the third grade, her thirst for knowledge and skill remained unquenched. At the age of 18, she made a pivotal decision to delve into Loin Loom weaving, learning the art from her sister and mother.
With her newfound craft, she ventured into the bustling markets, showcasing her creations to eager buyers. Her products garnered attention not only locally but also found their way to distant villages and marketplaces through traders. However, the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood temporarily interrupted her weaving pursuits.
Undeterred by the demands of domestic life, her determination to support her family reignited her passion for weaving. Recognizing her talent, local officers extended their support, appointing her as a weaving teacher. In 2016 and 2017, she began a new chapter, imparting her expertise to eager learners in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills.
The turning point arrived in 2019 when she was appointed as an Atelier under the Meghalaya Age initiative, receiving a substantial grant of 5 lakhs from the government—an invaluable lifeline for her craft. Buoyed by this support, her vision expanded further in 2022 when she availed schemes under BADO, acquiring four handlooms and a warehouse to scale up her operations.
With her newfound resources, she set out to empower others, employing skilled workers and offering them a generous commission. Her ethos of shared success not only uplifted her team but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration.
Fuelled by her passion for weaving and a desire to pay it forward, she embarked on a mission to impart her knowledge to the younger generation. Collaborating with organizations like MSSDS, Skill Meghalaya, MSRLS, NRLM, and IBDLP, she conducted training sessions in various parts of the Garo Hills, inspiring scores of young people and dropout students to embrace the art of weaving.
As she continues to weave her dreams into reality, her legacy serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come—a reminder that with determination and support, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.
